Benefits of Adaptive Riding

Research has shown that the gentle movement of a horse can:

•   Stimulate the muscles

•   Increase circulation

•   Improve balance

•   Increase strength and control

•   Improve concentration levels

•  Teach patience

•  Help riders gain self-esteem

•  Aid in building interpersonal relationships

Every rider has different needs, and the Crossroads instructor will develop a lesson plan to fit each participant based on their medical information and personal goals. There are physical, psychological, educational, and social benefits to be gained through participation in an adaptive riding program. You or your child will develop riding skills and learn about horses. Riding is also an enjoyable recreation activity that improves quality of life.

If your are unable to ride, you can still benefit from interacting with the horse and the Crossroads Center staff and volunteers. Remember, one of the most important benefits of the Crossroads Center program is fun and socialization.

Adaptive horseback riding is a special world that brings together horses and people with different abilities. In the process, the lives of everyone involved are enriched.

Some of the activities you might see during a riding lesson:

• learning the parts of a horse

• grooming the horse

• horseback exercises

• playing games

• working on communication skills

• cognitive activities

• developing riding skills

Adaptive riding is appropriate for most people with disabilities, including Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Learning Disabilities, ADD, Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, Paralysis, Amputations, Down Syndrome, Stress Disorders and more. It is important to have your physician clear you or your child for participation in riding activities. If you or your child is working with a physical, occupational, or speech therapist, or a psychotherapist, it is important that you share this information with Crossroads so that we can use this information to plan your lessons. Any information you provide to Crossroads is confidential.

Your application will be evaluated to determine if Crossroads can provide equine activities that are safe for the rider, the horse, and staff and volunteers.
