Safety
Safety is a primary concern at Crossroads Center, Inc. While we cannot completely eliminate all risks associated with equine activities, our goal is to create the safest environment possible for both horses and humans. Crossroads Center, Inc. is a member of PATH International, one of the most knowledgeable authorities on safety in the arena of therapeutic riding. The programs developed at our facility are developed through our relationship with PATH. The guidelines set forth by PATH have established standards for safety, service provision, and qualifications for instructors, volunteers, and service providers.
All riders are required to sign a liability release before participating in Crossroads programs.
Safety helmets
SAFETY HELMETS ARE REQUIRED FOR ANYONE PARTICIPATING IN A CROSSROADS CENTER ACTIVITY. This includes staff and clients. Helmets must meet or exceed ASTM regulations. This is a PATH mandatory standard.
Footwear
Riders should wear a closed toe shoe if at all possible. It is recommended the rider wear a hard sole shoe or boot with a heel, but athletic shoes are acceptable. We use safety stirrups to prevent a rider’s foot from getting caught in the stirrup. Under no circumstances will a rider be allowed to ride using a standard stirrup unless they have the correct foot wear.Riding boots must be worn when using standard stirrups. This is a PATH mandatory standard.
Equipment for the horse
Riders will be assigned either a surcingle (pad and girth with handle) or a saddle to use in their lesson. Safety checks will be done periodically throughout the lesson to make sure the rider is secure.
Equipment for you
Long pants that are not too tight will protect you from accidental rubs. Remove large items from your pockets. If you get overheated easily, consider a cooling vest or other cooling items. A bandana dipped in cold water can be refreshing.
Facilities
The center has a concrete loading platform for wheelchairs and a ramp to the mounting area. Please do not allow children to play on the mounting ramp. The restroom has running hot and cold water and is handicapped accessible. Riders may park by the entrance doors. Volunteers should park farther from the doors.
Loud noise and sudden movement
Please avoid making loud noises or sudden movements around the horses, as this might startle a horse. Don’t approach a horse from directly behind, as the horse can’t see you. Our horses are trained to be very safe, but loud or unusual noises or sudden movements can lead to a horse shying away from what it considers to be a danger.
Cell phones
Phones should be turned off when you are in the arena.
Visitors
Family members or friends of the rider are welcome to observe the rider. Please keep children reasonably quiet and in the viewing area. Children must be accompanied by an adult and must be supervised. Please don’t allow children to disrupt a therapy session.
Cameras
Please ask permission before taking photos. Some participants may not want their picture taken. DO NOT USE FLASH when taking photos of the horses.
Pets
Please do not bring your pets to the arena.
Feeding horses
Ask permission if you want to give a treat to our horses. Some horses are on restricted diets. Other horses may become pushy or demanding when given snacks. It is important to plan when, where, and what treats can be given. Please check with a center staff member.
First Aid and CPR
Instructors have current certification in both first aid and CPR.
Medical forms
Riders must keep medical information up to date. If you require emergency medical treatment, we need current information to give to the medical personnel. We also need to know if you have any changes in your condition that might affect your riding activities. Volunteers should update their information as needed.
Smoking
Smoking is prohibited outside or inside the arena due to fire danger and danger from second hand smoke to our clients. You can smoke inside your car.
Arena Gate
The arena gate must be closed any time a rider is in the arena. This is a PATH mandatory standard.
Fire Emergency
In case of fire, everyone must evacuate the building immediately. Meet up by the dumpster on the east side of the building in the parking area. Call the fire department and stay on the line with them until they have all the information they need. There are fire extinguishers located by the doors.
Weather Emergency
Please stay alert during threatening weather. Keep the radio on in case weather warnings are issued. Lessons will be cancelled during thunderstorm and tornado warnings. Should a tornado approach during a riding session, take shelter in the Cross home basement south of the arena.
Riding lessons are cancelled if the temperature is over 95 degrees. We will announce this via Facebook.
